In the Crevice of Time: New and Collected Poems (John Hopkins, Poetry and Fiction)
Published in Hardcover by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (July, 1995)
Author: Josephine Jacobsen
Average review score:

A Poet's Poet
Ms. Jacobsen is not a poet whose name will ring familiar with most Americans, which is unfortunate. She writes wonderfully controlled, strange & sonorous poetry which is read and celebrated by other writers practicing the craft. This book is filled with poems which Ms. Jacobsen manages to make seem effortless - in the poem "The Monosyllable" for example, she says "It took care of rain, short/ noon, long dark./ It had rough kin;/ did not stall./ With it, she said,/ I may,/ if I can,/ sleep...." And in another lovely poem titled "Yellow," she writes: "...it appeared/ to carve the curve of clouds/ and, as sun, shatter them./ The stars grew yellower/ yellow whirls on wheels on whirls/ leaves flew yellow/ the corn sprang/ yellow and the crows/ winged with a yellow nimbus." I wish this book were on the bookshelves of many more people. Ms. Jacobsen has won numerous awards and deserves to be read by a more general population beyond the confines of academia. This is a book filled with melodious langauge and startling imagery, both of which are extended by a sharp intellect. And as a collection from other books, this a hefty volume & a real bargain.

The Inland Island
Published in Hardcover by Story Pr (March, 1996)
Authors: Annie Cannon and Josephine Winslow Johnson
Average review score:

Nature writing at its most thought-provoking best
This is my all-time favorite book. If you like "Pilgrim at Tinker's Creek," be sure to read "Inland Island" by Josephine Johnson. She has the same unromanticized view of nature's uncompromising rule (whatever survives, works), and she has the mind of an agnostic poet expressed in prose. Example: I think it is disgusting to praise God for making us acknowledge His presence by a poke in our eyeballs with His sharp stick.

And: All day, a rain of life and death goes on. A catbird crashed against the pane and fell gasping. Then it gathered itself in a narrow canoe shape and lay there patiently waiting to recover or die. Awareness is a name of agony. I wish there was something to pray to for its life. But one must not get excited. One must not grieve. Nature, Mom, all-powerful, monstrous and monolithic Mother sits and chooses.

The whole book is wonderful! I wish I could read it again for the first time just for the pleasure of its discovery.

Legend of the Lost Josephine Mine by Joseph R. Young
This is a fantastic book. Great for all ages. It takes a good book for me to stay interested, but I could not put this one down. From the first page to the last I was totally intrigued. I was taken back to my own childhood and the fantasies from those golden days when my father would tell me stories such as this one.

The story of the boy mysteriously finding himself in the time of pirates, treasures, and ships, is so enticing and exciting. To imagine that in the mist of all this he finds true freindship and love is so incredible. I loved the mystery of the mine, the treasure, the pirates. Especially old Split Eye. He is a fantastic character in this book. I also like the way the author "keeps you on your toes" with this book. He keeps it going, making it fun and easy to read.

I highly reccomend this book for all ages. I have read it with my 8 and 12 year old. They loved it. It's a book that can by enjoyed by the whole family.

Live Dolls
When I was a child, "Live Dolls" books were my favorite. I read them over and over again. They were fanciful and magical -- dolls come to life and doll clothes grow on trees. For a little girl with a vivid imagination and a love of dolls, these books are the ultimate. Today, they may be too sweet and quaint, but the magic is still there.
